Glucose Feeding

Glucose feeding is the controlled addition of glucose to a biological system, such as a cell or microbial culture, to provide a readily available carbon and energy source. Cells take up glucose through membrane transporters and metabolize it through glycolysis, generating ATP and intermediates for biosynthesis; the feeding rate and concentration influence growth, metabolism, and byproduct formation. In laboratory biology and bioprocessing, glucose feeding supports high-density cultures, recombinant protein production, and studies of cellular energy use. Careful control can prevent nutrient depletion or excessive glucose accumulation, helping researchers maintain stable conditions and improve product yield and reproducibility.

The activity of single neurons from adult-aged mice can be studied by dissociating neurons from specific brain regions and using fluorescent membrane potential dye imaging. By testing responses to changes in glucose, this technique can be used to study the glucose sensitivity of adult ventromedial hypothalamic neurons.

Assessing Glucose Uptake in the Motor Neurons of Drosophila Larvae with Upregulated Glucose Metabolism

2025

The video demonstrates a technique for measuring glucose uptake in Drosophila larval motor neurons using a fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET)-based intracellular glucose sensor. After dissecting the larvae to expose the ventral nerve cord, the motor neurons are visualized through the fluorescence emitted by the sensor's donor fluorophore. When stimulated with glucose, FRET between the sensor's donor and acceptor fluorophores triggers the emission of fluorescence from the acceptor,...
