Grasshopper Carcass

A grasshopper carcass is the preserved or naturally decomposing body of a dead grasshopper, providing biological material for studying anatomy, ecology, and postmortem change. After death, internal tissues break down through autolysis and microbial activity, while scavengers and environmental conditions such as moisture and temperature influence decomposition; the chitin-rich exoskeleton often persists longer than soft tissues. Examining grasshopper carcasses helps researchers investigate nutrient cycling, arthropod interactions, population mortality, and habitat conditions. These remains can also support specimen-based instruction and comparative studies of insect morphology, making them useful across field biology, laboratory research, and ecological monitoring.

Biocontained Carcass Composting for Control of Infectious Disease Outbreak in Livestock

Using readily available materials, this biocontained composting system enables effective on-site disposal of large animal carcasses arising in the event of infectious disease outbreak. This procedure kills most infectious agents in carcasses and contaminated manure. Once infectious agent is confirmed non-viable, mature compost can be spread as fertilizer.

We present methods to evaluate how predation risk can alter the chemical quality of herbivore prey by inducing dietary changes to meet demands of heightened stress, and how the decomposition of carcasses from these stressed herbivores slows subsequent plant litter decomposition by soil microbes.

Carbon and Nitrogen Analysis of Environmental Samples

2023

Source: Laboratories of Margaret Workman and Kimberly Frye - Depaul University Elemental Analysis is a method used to determine elemental composition of a material. In environmental samples such as soils, scientists are particularly interested in the amounts of two ecologically important elements, nitrogen and carbon. Elemental analysis by the flash combustion technique works by oxidizing the sample with a catalyst through combustion in a high-temperature chamber. The products of combustion are...

We report a method to quantify muscle area, which is an indirect method to determine muscle mass in Drosophila adults. We demonstrate the application of our methodology by analyzing the indirect flight muscles in a Drosophila model of Myotonic Dystrophy disease.

Primordial Germ Cell Transplantation for CRISPR/Cas9-based Leapfrogging in Xenopus

Genes essential for survival pose technical hurdles for creating mutant lines. Leapfrogging circumvents lethality by combining genome editing with primordial germ cell transplantation to create wild-type animals carrying germline mutations. Leapfrogging also permits the efficient generation of homozygous null mutants in the F1 generation. Here, the transplantation step is demonstrated.
