Keloids

Keloids are benign, raised scars that extend beyond the original wound and result from abnormal tissue repair. During healing, persistent activation of fibroblasts and signaling molecules such as transforming growth factor beta can drive excessive production and accumulation of collagen in the extracellular matrix. Keloids may develop after surgery, injury, burns, or minor skin trauma and can cause itching, pain, or restricted movement when they form near joints. Studying their cellular and molecular biology helps researchers understand dysregulated wound healing and supports the development of preventive strategies and treatments, including scar management, injections, and surgical approaches.
