Laboratory Rabbit Breeding

Laboratory rabbit breeding is the planned pairing, reproduction, and care of domestic rabbits maintained for biological research, supporting consistent animal populations and experimental studies. Breeding programs manage mating, reproductive timing, pregnancy, and neonatal care while considering genetic background, health status, housing, and welfare. Controlled breeding can provide animals with defined traits for immunology, reproductive biology, developmental studies, antibody production, and disease research. Careful record keeping and monitoring of fertility, litter development, and inherited characteristics improve colony health, experimental reproducibility, and responsible use of laboratory animals.

Fundamentals of Breeding and Weaning

Source: Kay Stewart, RVT, RLATG, CMAR; Valerie A. Schroeder, RVT, RLATG. University of Notre Dame, IN Millions of mice and rats are bred for use in biomedical research each year. Worldwide, there are several large commercial breeding facilities that supply mice to research laboratories, but many facilities also choose to breed mice and rats in-house to reduce costs and increase research options. When breeding in the animal facility, researchers are able to manipulate the genetics of the...

Breeding Management in Rodent Studies

All animal procedures described here must be conducted in accordance with institutional animal ethics guidelines and approved by IACUC. All procedures must follow the principles of the 3Rs—Replacement, Reduction, and Refinement—and must be performed by trained personnel. Breeding management supports the 3Rs by minimizing unnecessary animal production and ensuring that only the number of animals required for a study is generated. Effective breeding strategies help reduce surplus animals and...

Zebrafish Breeding and Embryo Handling

2023

Zebrafish (Danio rerio) are an important model organism that is particularly valuable for research in developmental biology. Zebrafish are extremely fertile and can produce hundreds of progeny per week, so it is relatively easy to collect a large number of embryos for high sample numbers. Furthermore, zebrafish undergo rapid development and embryos are transparent, allowing for easy visualization of developmental processes. This video covers the steps required for the collection of newly...

Plant Breeding and Biotechnology

Crop cultivation has a long history in human civilization, with records showing the cultivation of cereal plants beginning at around 8000 BC. This early plant breeding was developed primarily to provide a steady supply of food. As humans' understanding of genetics advanced, improved crop varieties could be achieved more quickly. Artificial selection could be more directed, and crop varieties enhanced for favorable traits more quickly to produce better, more robust, or more palatable plants.

Training Laboratory Rabbits to Refine Routine Husbandry Procedures

2024

Training protocols involving positive reinforcement for routine husbandry procedures in rabbits were developed and proved to be successful, as the rabbits reliably showed the trained behaviors at the weekly general examination. Picking the rabbits up with the transport box was less aversive than the conventional handling technique.
