Lesser Trochanter

The lesser trochanter is a small, conical bony projection on the posteromedial side of the proximal femur that serves as an important anatomical landmark and muscle-attachment site. The iliopsoas tendon, formed by the psoas major and iliacus muscles, attaches here; when these muscles contract, they pull on the femur to flex the thigh at the hip and support movements involved in walking, climbing, and maintaining posture. In biology and anatomy, the lesser trochanter helps explain hip biomechanics and muscle function, while its position and appearance on radiographs, CT scans, and other imaging studies support evaluation of femoral injury and developmental anatomy.
