Mating Behavior

Mating behavior is the set of actions and interactions organisms use to find, attract, select, and reproduce with partners, making it central to sexual reproduction and the evolution of species. It is shaped by sensory signals, courtship displays, communication, mate choice, competition, and reproductive physiology, with environmental conditions and biological traits influencing when and how these behaviors occur. Studying mating behavior helps explain sexual selection, reproductive success, social relationships, and the maintenance of diversity within populations. Research in this area also informs conservation strategies, animal behavior studies, and investigations of how environmental change affects reproduction.

Sexual Selection Class Simulation ExpandNote: In this activity, you and your classmates will portray a sexually reproducing population consisting of an equal number of male and female animals. You will simulate several different mating scenarios to determine how relative quality, attractiveness, sex, and parental commitment affect mate choice and reproductive success. The goal of this activity is to maximize your progeny. Hypotheses: There are several overall hypotheses for female and male...

Choosing Mates Evolutionary fitness is largely determined by the ability of an organism to survive and successfully produce offspring. Critical to this process is sexual selection, which plays a large role in the determination of mating pairs, and thus which genes are passed on to the next generation. Often, intense competition for mates within a population places selective pressure on traits related to courtship and copulation. Natural selection that results from these pressures is called...

Determining Roles and Making Gamete Packages for Class ExpandFirst determine the quantity of materials needed based on the class size. This activity can easily be scaled up or down. In Table 1, options are listed for 30, 20 or 10 students. Click Here to download Table 1 NOTE: You may easily create a custom number by following these simple guidelines. Ensure an equal male-to-female ratio. Designate the majority as average quality individuals. Make the number of high- and low-quality...
