Mouse Brain Function

Mouse brain function encompasses the coordinated neural processes that enable sensation, movement, learning, memory, emotion, and essential physiological regulation. Neurons communicate through electrical impulses and chemical synapses, while interconnected brain regions process sensory information, integrate internal and external signals, and generate adaptive responses. Studying these mechanisms in mice allows researchers to examine neural circuits, behavior, development, and responses to genetic or environmental changes under controlled conditions. Mouse models therefore support investigations of nervous-system biology and disease, including how brain activity contributes to cognition, motor control, and neurological disorders, while providing a foundation for evaluating potential therapeutic strategies.

We present a hands-on, step-by-step, rapid protocol for mouse brain removal and dissection of discrete regions from fresh brain tissue. Obtaining brain regions for molecular analysis has become routine in many neuroscience labs. These brain regions are immediately frozen to obtain high quality transcriptomic data for system level analysis.

We describe a protocol allowing the purification of the mouse brain's vascular compartment. Isolated brain vessels include endothelial cells linked by tight junctions and surrounded by a continuous basal lamina, pericytes, vascular smooth muscle cells, as well as perivascular astroglial membranes.

Delivery of a Traumatic Brain Injury to a Mouse Brain

This video demonstrates the delivery of Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) in mice. After exposing the skull, the TBI site is marked. The mouse is then positioned under the TBI device. The impact is delivered by lifting the metal rod and allowing it to drop freely onto the impactor, which is in contact with the skull.
