Nonlinear Regression Curve Fit

Nonlinear regression curve fitting is a statistical method for describing relationships in data when the response does not change as a straight-line function of its predictors. The method specifies a nonlinear equation, estimates its parameters by iteratively minimizing the differences between observed and predicted values, and evaluates how well the fitted curve represents the data. In biology, researchers use nonlinear fits to characterize processes such as population growth, dose-response behavior, enzyme activity, and other response patterns. These models can reveal meaningful thresholds, rates, and maxima, supporting quantitative interpretation, prediction, and comparison of biological systems.

Regression Toward the Mean

2020

Regression toward the mean (“RTM”) is a phenomenon in which extremely high or low values—for example, and individual’s blood pressure at a particular moment—appear closer to a group’s average upon remeasuring. Although this statistical peculiarity is the result of random error and chance, it has been problematic across various medical, scientific, financial and psychological applications. In particular, RTM, if not taken into account, can interfere when researchers try to extrapolate results...

Studying the Permeation of FITC and FITC-Ferritin through an In Vitro Blood-Brain Barrier Model

2025

This video demonstrates a method to study permeation through an in vitro blood-brain barrier (BBB) model using astrocytes and endothelial cells on a membrane insert, with free FITC and FITC-loaded ferritin. FITC-ferritin bound to receptors on endothelial cells and crossed the membrane barrier to the lower chamber while free FITC showed restricted permeation and remained in the upper chamber.

Nonlinear Pharmacokinetics: Causes of Nonlinearity

2025

Nonlinearity in drug pharmacokinetics is caused by various factors influencing how a drug is absorbed, distributed, metabolized, and excreted. Understanding these nonlinear processes is crucial for predicting drug behavior in the body and optimizing drug dosing regimens. Nonlinear drug absorption can occur when the process is rate-limited by solubility, carrier-mediated transport systems, or saturation of the presystemic gut wall or hepatic metabolism. For instance, high doses of riboflavin...

FITC-Dextran Feeding: A Method to Quantify Intestinal Permeability in C. elegans

2016

Saturable and reverse saturable scattering were discovered in isolated plasmonic particles and adopted as a novel non-bleaching contrast method in super-resolution microscopy. Here the experimental procedures of detecting and extracting nonlinear scattering are explained in detail, as well as how to enhance resolution with the aid of saturated excitation microscopy.
