Polysaccharide Coating

Polysaccharide coating is a layer of carbohydrate polymers applied to a biological, cellular, or material surface to modify its interactions with the surrounding environment. These coatings work through polymer chains that hydrate, form networks, and present chemical groups capable of binding cells, proteins, or other molecules; composition and thickness influence permeability, adhesion, stability, and degradation. In biology, polysaccharide coatings can help protect cells, improve the biocompatibility of biomaterials, control molecular release, and support tissue-interface studies. Their tunable properties make them useful for investigating extracellular-matrix-like environments and developing drug-delivery systems, wound-care materials, and engineered tissues.

Biosynthesis of Polysaccharides

2025

Polysaccharides such as glycogen and starch are synthesized from nucleoside diphosphate sugars, primarily uridine diphosphate glucose (UDPG) and adenosine diphosphate glucose (ADPG). These activated glucose donors act as key intermediates in carbohydrate metabolism and biosynthesis. UDPG primarily involves glycogen synthesis in animals and many bacteria, while ADPG plays a fundamental role in starch synthesis in plants and certain bacteria.UDPG is formed when glucose-1-phosphate reacts with...

Cellulose and Pectic Polysaccharides

2023

Every plant cell has a cell wall that protects the cell, provides structural support, and gives the cell shape. Cellulose, the main structural component of the plant cell wall, makes up over 30% of plant matter. It is the most abundant organic compound on earth. Cellulose is an unbranched polysaccharide composed of linear chains of glucose molecules linked by β (1→4) glycosidic bonds. As a cell matures, its cell wall specializes according to its type. For example, the parenchyma cells of...

2025

In this video, we demonstrate the isolation of peripheral blood mononuclear cells, PBMCs, containing monocytes and lymphocytes from a human buffy coat by density gradient centrifugation. The isolated PBMCs can be used for further analysis.

Comparative Study on the Polysaccharide Contents and Antioxidant Activities of Hippophae rhamnoides subsp. sinensis and Hippophae gyantsensis

2025

This study compared the polysaccharide contents of Hippophae rhamnoides subsp. sinensis Rousi and Hippophae gyantsensis (Rousi) Y. S. Lian obtained through hot water extraction and quantified through phenol-sulfuric acid colorimetry. We also investigated in vitro antioxidant activities of polysaccharides from these two Hippophae species through 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl free radical scavenging experiments.
