Protein Extraction

Protein extraction is the process of isolating proteins from biological cells, tissues, or other samples for biochemical analysis and research. It typically begins with cell disruption by mechanical force, detergents, or osmotic methods, followed by treatment with a buffered solution that maintains protein stability; centrifugation then separates soluble proteins from cellular debris, often with protease inhibitors limiting degradation. The resulting extract can be analyzed by techniques such as gel electrophoresis, immunoblotting, or mass spectrometry. In biology, protein extraction supports studies of gene expression, enzyme activity, signaling pathways, disease mechanisms, and the purification of proteins for structural or functional investigation.
