Pulmonary Infections

Pulmonary infections are diseases in which pathogenic microorganisms invade or multiply in the airways or lung tissue, causing inflammation and potentially impairing breathing. They may arise when bacteria, viruses, fungi, or other microbes are inhaled or aspirated; the resulting immune response recruits inflammatory cells and can fill alveoli with fluid, reducing oxygen exchange. In biology, studying pulmonary infections connects host defense, pathogen transmission, tissue injury, and recovery, while diagnosis combines symptoms, imaging, and microbiological analysis to guide treatment and infection control.

Source: Balczon, R., et al. Methods for Detecting Cytotoxic Amyloids Following Infection of Pulmonary Endothelial Cells by Pseudomonas aeruginosa. J. Vis. Exp. (2018)This video demonstrates the procedure for generating cytotoxic supernatant from pulmonary endothelial cells following infection with Pseudomonas aeruginosa. It outlines how bacterial effector proteins disrupt host cell structure and induce the release of cytotoxic amyloid oligomers into the supernatant.

The following protocol describes the methodology for the acquisition and analysis of echocardiographic images used to obtain the Left Atrial Volume (LAV), Aorta (Ao) diameter, and Pulmonary Artery (PA) diameter in mice. This technique is a non-invasive, non-terminal procedure that allows assessment of the cardiopulmonary function.

Machine Learning-Based Cough Tone Classification: Diagnostic Exploration of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease and Respiratory Tract Infections

This study effectively accomplished the automated classification of two distinct categories by acquiring cough sound data from patients diagnosed with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and respiratory tract infections (RTI), utilizing an integration of speech signal processing techniques and machine learning algorithms.

Catheter-based Endovascular Angioplasty for Fibrosing Mediastinitis-associated Pulmonary Vein Stenosis

2025

Pulmonary vein stenosis (PVS) is a life-threatening complication of fibrosing mediastinitis (FM), with a poor prognosis if not properly treated. Currently, catheter-based endovascular angioplasty is a promising therapeutic strategy for FM-associated PVS. This protocol primarily outlines a stepwise approach to the transcatheter procedure for FM-associated PVS.
