Stem-loop Recognition

Stem-loop recognition is the molecular identification of hairpin-shaped nucleic acid structures, in which a self-complementary sequence folds into a paired stem and an unpaired loop. Recognition occurs when proteins, enzymes, or complementary nucleic acids read the structure’s three-dimensional shape together with specific bases exposed in the stem or loop, enabling selective binding and downstream activity. In biology, this process helps regulate RNA stability, transcription termination, translation, and genome replication. Studying stem-loop recognition clarifies how nucleic-acid structure controls gene expression and supports the design of RNA probes, molecular diagnostics, and structure-guided therapeutic strategies.

Source: Laboratories of Jonas T. Kaplan and Sarah I. Gimbel—University of Southern California The autonomic nervous system (ANS) controls the activity of the body's internal organs and regulates changes in their activity depending on the current environment. The vagus nerve, which innervates many of the internal organs, is an important part of the system. When our brain senses danger, vagal tone is inhibited, leading to a set of changes in the body designed to make us more prepared to fight or...

We describe a novel surgical method for catheterizing 'intestinal loops' within the ileum of sheep. Once animals have recovered from surgery and have cleared antibiotics and analgesics, multiple treatments can be deposited directly in loops via the catheters.

Revenue Recognition

The revenue recognition principle is a central guideline in accrual accounting that dictates when revenue should be recorded in financial statements. It requires that revenue be recognized when a company satisfies a performance obligation, meaning when it has delivered goods or completed services as agreed in a contract, regardless of when the customer pays. This principle ensures that income is reported in the accounting period in which it is actually earned, providing a more accurate...

Expense Recognition

An expense represents the outflow of economic resources a business uses to generate revenue, encompassing costs such as labor, materials, and services. In accrual accounting, the recording of these costs follows the expense recognition principle, which requires that expenses be recognized in the same accounting period as the related revenues. This alignment ensures that financial statements accurately reflect a business's economic activity during a specific period rather than simply tracking...
