Sugarcane Root Phenotyping

Sugarcane root phenotyping is the systematic measurement and characterization of root traits, including architecture, depth, length, diameter, branching, and biomass, to understand how roots support plant performance. It combines methods such as soil excavation, root washing, imaging, and image analysis to quantify root structure under controlled or field conditions, while linking visible traits to processes such as water and nutrient acquisition. These measurements help researchers compare sugarcane genotypes, identify root characteristics associated with drought tolerance or resource-use efficiency, and guide breeding for resilient, productive crops. Root phenotyping also provides biological insight into belowground growth that cannot be inferred from aboveground traits alone.
