Volvulus

Volvulus is an abnormal twisting of a hollow, often intestinal, organ around its supporting tissue, creating a potentially serious obstruction. In the intestine, rotation around the mesentery can block the passage of contents while compressing blood vessels, which may cause ischemia, tissue injury, and necrosis if not corrected. Volvulus can arise from developmental anatomical abnormalities, excessive intestinal mobility, or acquired changes in organ position. Studying this condition connects embryonic development, anatomy, and gastrointestinal physiology, while informing recognition of symptoms, imaging-based diagnosis, and urgent treatment strategies that restore normal positioning and blood flow.
