Waste Management Procedure

A waste management procedure is a systematic method for identifying, separating, treating, and disposing of waste to protect people, organisms, and the environment. In biology laboratories, it begins with source-based segregation of biological, chemical, sharps, and general waste, followed by secure containment, labeling, and appropriate decontamination or disposal. Treatments such as disinfection or sterilization reduce biological hazards before materials leave the laboratory, while regulated handling limits exposure and prevents environmental contamination. Consistent procedures support biosafety, meet institutional requirements, and preserve the integrity of research by reducing cross-contamination and accidental release of potentially hazardous materials.

2023

Robert M. Rioux and Taslima A. Zaman, Pennsylvania State University, Pennsylvania, PA Users are responsible for the proper disposal of the waste generated during their work. Improper waste disposal may severely endanger public health and/or the environment. The handling of hazardous waste must be regulated from the moment of generation until its disposal at its offsite final destination facility. A waste management system must be devised before work begins on any laboratory activity. Users...

All animal procedures described here must be conducted in accordance with institutional animal ethics guidelines and approved by IACUC. All procedures must follow the principles of the 3Rs—Replacement, Reduction, and Refinement—and must be performed by trained personnel. Monitoring Animals for Signs of Pain and Distress Recognizing early signs of pain is essential for ethical animal research. Animals are routinely monitored using behavioral, physical, and physiological parameters that reflect...
