Water Distribution

Water distribution is the movement and allocation of water among organisms, tissues, cells, and their surrounding environments, a process essential for biological structure and function. In biology, water crosses selectively permeable membranes by osmosis, while aquaporin channels and pressure gradients regulate its movement; in plants, xylem transports water from roots to leaves, where transpiration helps drive flow. Understanding water distribution clarifies how cells maintain volume and homeostasis, how plants respond to drought, and how tissues exchange nutrients and waste. It also supports research on physiology, ecology, and the effects of changing environmental water availability.

Observing the water distribution within the xylem provides significant information regarding water flow dynamics in woody plants. In this study, we demonstrate the practical approach to observe xylem water distribution in situ by using a cryostat and cryo-SEM, which eliminates artifactual changes in the water status during sample preparation.

Drug Distribution: Volume of Distribution

2023

The volume of distribution refers to the theoretical volume necessary to contain the entire amount of an administered drug at the same concentration observed in the blood plasma. The body's intracellular fluid compartment, which makes up two-thirds of the total body water, is contrasted with the extracellular fluid compartment—comprising plasma and interstitial fluid—that accounts for one-third. The volume of distribution can vary depending on the characteristics of the drug.

F Distribution

The F distribution was named after Sir Ronald Fisher, an English statistician. The F statistic is a ratio (a fraction) with two sets of degrees of freedom; one for the numerator and one for the denominator. The F distribution is derived from the Student's t distribution. The values of the F distribution are squares of the corresponding values of the t distribution. One-Way ANOVA expands the t test for comparing more than two groups. The scope of that derivation is beyond the level of this...

Species Distribution and Biogeography - Concepts

Species Distribution Biogeography is the study of species distribution across geographic space and the processes that shape these distributions. This discipline is based on the assumption that each species within a location must have immigrated from another geographic area or evolved from a local species. Within each habitat, a variety of biotic and abiotic factors act on individual species to shape birth, death, immigration, and emigration rates. To avoid local extinction, the combined birth...
