Wound Imaging

Wound imaging is the systematic visualization and measurement of tissue injury, providing objective information about wound size, appearance, depth, and healing over time. It uses standardized photography or specialized modalities to capture images under controlled conditions, while image-analysis tools quantify features such as area, color, tissue type, and changes between visits. In biology and clinical research, these measurements support wound classification, treatment monitoring, and assessment of tissue repair. Consistent imaging can reduce reliance on subjective visual judgment, improve documentation, and generate data for studying inflammation, re-epithelialization, angiogenesis, and the effectiveness of therapies.

This protocol focuses on damaging the ocular surface of zebrafish through abrasion to assess the subsequent wound closure at the cellular level. This approach exploits an ocular burr to partly remove the corneal epithelium and uses scanning electron microscopy to track changes in cell morphology during wound closure.

Collecting And Measuring Wound Exudate Biochemical Mediators In Surgical Wounds

This article provides a detailed and visual description of a methodology for collecting and measuring biochemical inflammatory and nociceptive mediators at the surgical wound site following cesarean delivery. This human bioassay has been used to determine correlations between wound and serum cytokine concentrations and drug-mediated changes in wound cytokines, chemokines and neuropetides.
