Biological Barrier Penetration

Biological barrier penetration is the movement of molecules across protective biological interfaces, such as cell membranes, epithelial layers, and the blood–brain barrier, and is central to understanding how substances reach specific tissues. Penetration depends on molecular size, lipophilicity, polarity, charge, and hydrogen bonding, which influence passive diffusion, paracellular transport, or interactions with membrane transporters. In chemistry and drug development, researchers use these principles to design compounds with suitable absorption, distribution, and tissue exposure while limiting unwanted toxicity. Studying barrier penetration also supports targeted delivery systems and improves predictions of how pharmaceuticals, metabolites, and environmental chemicals behave in the body.

The goal of this protocol is to alter the penetrance of lethal skeletal mutant phenotypes in zebrafish by selective breeding. Lethal mutants cannot be grown to adulthood and bred themselves, therefore this protocol describes a method for tracking and selecting penetrance through multiple generations by progeny testing.

Biological Effects of Radiation

2020

All radioactive nuclides emit high-energy particles or electromagnetic waves. When this radiation encounters living cells, it can cause heating, break chemical bonds, or ionize molecules. The most serious biological damage results when these radioactive emissions fragment or ionize molecules. For example, α and β particles emitted from nuclear decay reactions possess much higher energies than ordinary chemical bond energies. When these particles strike and penetrate matter, they produce ions...

Inducing Penetrating Traumatic Brain Injury in Adult Drosophila Flies

2025

This video demonstrates the induction of penetrating traumatic brain injury in the drosophila brain. Newly emerged flies are selected, anesthetized, and positioned under a fluorescence-equipped stereo microscope. The GFP-expressing mushroom body is identified, and a Minutien pin is inserted to cause injury. The flies are allowed to recover for further studies.

This video presents synthetic biology and its role in bioengineering. Synthetic biology refers to the methods used to genetically modify organisms in order to make them capable of producing large quantities of a product. This product could be a protein that the cell already makes or a new protein that has been encoded in a newly-inserted DNA sequence. Here, we discuss how an organism's genetic material is modified using transformation or transfection. Then, the process is shown in the...
