Early Earth Simulation

Early Earth Simulation is the experimental reconstruction of the environmental and chemical conditions thought to have existed on the young Earth, allowing researchers to test how inorganic compounds could form biologically relevant molecules. In chemistry, it works by placing selected gases, water, minerals, and energy sources such as heat or electrical discharge under controlled temperature, pressure, and atmospheric conditions, then analyzing reaction products over time. These models help evaluate pathways for prebiotic synthesis, compare competing environmental scenarios, and identify molecules that may have accumulated before modern biology. Results inform origin-of-life research and guide laboratory studies of planetary habitability and chemical evolution.

Conditions on Early Earth

2020

Around 4 billion years ago, oceans began to condense on earth while volcanic eruptions released nitrogen, carbon dioxide, methane, ammonia, and hydrogen into the primordial atmosphere. However, organisms with the characteristics of life were not initially present on earth. Scientists have used experimentation to determine how organisms evolved that could grow, reproduce, and maintain an internal environment. In the 1920s, the scientists Oparin and Haldane proposed the idea that simple biological...

Flue gas from power plants is a cheap CO2 source for algal growth. We have built prototype "flue gas to algal cultivation" systems and described how to scale up the algal cultivation process. We have demonstrated the use of a mass-transfer bio-reaction model to simulate and to design the optimal operation of flue gas for the growth of Chlorella sp. in algal photo-bioreactors.
