Halogen Adjustment

Halogen adjustment is the deliberate selection, replacement, or repositioning of halogen atoms in a chemical compound to tune its reactivity and physical properties. Changing the halogen identity, number, or position alters electronegativity, bond strength, polarizability, steric effects, and electron distribution, which can influence reaction pathways and molecular interactions. In synthetic chemistry, these adjustments help control substitution, coupling, and functional-group transformations. In medicinal and materials chemistry, halogen adjustment can modify molecular stability, lipophilicity, binding behavior, and optical or electronic performance, supporting the systematic design and optimization of compounds for research and practical applications.

Group 17 elements, known as halogens, are nonmetals. At room temperature, fluorine and chlorine are gases, bromine is a liquid, and iodine a solid. Astatine is a highly unstable radioactive element, so currently, most of its properties are unknown due to its short half-life. Tennessine is a synthetic element also predicted to be in this group. The halogens are not found as single atoms but exist as diatomic molecules. The atomic radius increases from fluorine to iodine. The valence shell...

Halogenation of Alkenes

2025

Halogenation is the addition of chlorine or bromine across the double bond in an alkene to yield a vicinal dihalide. The reaction occurs in the presence of inert and non-nucleophilic solvents, such as methylene chloride, chloroform, or carbon tetrachloride. Consider the bromination of cyclopentene. Molecular bromine is polarized in the proximity of the π electrons of cyclopentene. An electrophilic bromine atom adds across the double bond, forming a cyclic bromonium ion intermediate. A...

The Anchoring-and-Adjustment Heuristic

In order to make good decisions, we use our knowledge and our reasoning. Often, this knowledge and reasoning is sound and solid. However, sometimes, we are swayed by biases or by others manipulating a situation. For example, let’s say you and three friends wanted to rent a house and had a combined target budget of $1,600. The realtor shows you only very run-down houses for $1,600 and then shows you a very nice house for $2,000. Might you ask each person to pay more in rent to get the $2,000...

Adjusting a Traverse

In the site survey of a four-sided traverse, internal angles are essential to ensure geometric accuracy. The survey revealed that the sum of the measured internal angles was 359 degrees and 48 minutes, which is 12 minutes less than the expected 360 degrees. This discrepancy signals an error likely arising from measurement inaccuracies during the fieldwork. To rectify this error, the adjustment process involved distributing the 12-minute shortfall equally across the four internal angles. By...
