Homo Polymerization

Homo polymerization is the formation of a polymer from only one type of monomer, producing a homopolymer with repeating units derived from that starting material. In a typical chain-growth process, an initiator creates a reactive center on a monomer, successive monomer molecules add during propagation, and termination or chain transfer controls the final chain length and molecular weight. This approach is central to producing materials such as polyethylene, polystyrene, and polyvinyl chloride, whose structures influence strength, flexibility, thermal behavior, and chemical resistance. Understanding homo polymerization helps chemists tailor polymer properties for packaging, construction, coatings, fibers, and other advanced materials.
