Metric System

The metric system is a decimal-based measurement framework that expresses physical quantities through standardized units, making scientific observations consistent and comparable. In chemistry, measurements are organized around SI units such as the meter, kilogram, second, kelvin, and mole, while prefixes including milli-, micro-, and kilo- scale units by powers of ten; dimensional analysis then supports reliable conversions between them. Chemists use metric measurements to determine mass, volume, temperature, amount of substance, density, and concentration, enabling accurate calculations in reactions, solution preparation, laboratory reporting, and quantitative analysis. Its common standards also improve communication and reproducibility across experiments and research fields.
