Nitrobenzene

Nitrobenzene is an aromatic organic compound in which a nitro group, -NO₂, is bonded to a benzene ring, making it an important model for understanding how substituents influence aromatic reactivity. It is commonly prepared by electrophilic aromatic substitution, in which nitric acid and sulfuric acid generate the nitronium ion, NO₂⁺, that replaces a hydrogen atom on benzene. The nitro group withdraws electron density, directing further substitution primarily toward the meta position and altering the compound’s physical and chemical behavior. Nitrobenzene also serves as an industrial intermediate for producing aniline, which is used in dyes, pharmaceuticals, polymers, and other chemical products.
