Phosphoric Acid Solution

Phosphoric acid solution is a homogeneous mixture of phosphoric acid, H3PO4, and water, valued for its controlled acidity and versatile chemical behavior. In aqueous solution, H3PO4 dissociates in successive steps, releasing hydrogen ions and forming dihydrogen phosphate, hydrogen phosphate, and phosphate ions; the relative amounts depend on concentration and pH. These equilibria make phosphoric acid solutions useful in acid-base titrations, buffer preparation, chemical synthesis, and pH adjustment. Studying their dissociation and speciation helps explain conductivity, neutralization reactions, and the behavior of phosphate-containing systems in laboratory and industrial chemistry.

Weak Acid Solutions

2020

Few compounds act as strong acids. A far greater number of compounds behave as weak acids and only partially react with water, leaving a large majority of dissolved molecules in their original form and generating a relatively small amount of hydronium ions. Weak acids are commonly encountered in nature, being the substances partly responsible for the tangy taste of citrus fruits, the stinging sensation of insect bites, and the unpleasant smells associated with body odor. A familiar example of a...

Strong Acid and Base Solutions

A strong acid is a compound that dissociates completely in an aqueous solution and produces a concentration of hydronium ions equal to the initial concentration of acid. For example, 0.20 M hydrobromic acid will dissociate completely in water and produces 0.20 M of hydronium ions and 0.20 M of bromide ions. On the other hand, a strong base is a compound that dissociates completely in an aqueous solution and produces hydroxide ions. For example, 0.015 M KOH, a group 1 metal hydroxide, will...

An excellent chemical and luminescence stabilities of (oxy)nitride phosphors present it as an promising alternative to currently used sulfide and oxide phosphors. In this paper, we present the way to investigate its local luminescence properties using low-energy cathodoluminescence (CL).

Leveling Effect and Non-Aqueous Acid-Base Solutions

This lesson defines the leveling effect in acidic and basic solutions and its role in aqueous and non-aqueous solutions. It is essential to understand the competing nature of various species in a chemical system. The Leveling Effect of a Solvent A generic acid (HA) reacts with the generic base (B-) to yield the corresponding conjugate base (A-) and conjugate acid (HB): Figure 1: A generic acid-base reaction However, if the reaction takes place in a solvent (HX), the solvent can also...

Solution Composition During Acid/Base Titrations

The titration of a weak acid with a strong base results in the formation of water and the conjugate base of the acid. For instance, titrating acetic acid with sodium hydroxide leads to the formation of water and sodium acetate. A solution of acetic acid and sodium acetate constitutes a buffer whose relative concentration at different stages of the titration is indicated by the α values, which represent percentages of the weak acid and its conjugate base. The α0 and α1 values represent the...
