Polyacrylic Acid Functionalization

Polyacrylic acid functionalization is the chemical modification of polyacrylic acid chains to introduce new reactive groups or alter the behavior of their carboxylic acid side chains. In chemistry, functionalization commonly proceeds through reactions such as esterification, amidation, or crosslinking, in which carboxyl groups react with alcohols, amines, or multifunctional linking agents under suitable conditions. These changes can adjust solubility, charge, swelling, adhesion, mechanical strength, and responsiveness to pH or ionic conditions. Functionalized polyacrylic acid is therefore useful in hydrogels, coatings, drug-delivery materials, adhesives, water-treatment systems, and other polymeric platforms requiring tailored surface or bulk properties.

Composition of Polyprotic Acid Solutions as a Function of pH

Polyprotic acids of the type H2M constitute two ionizable protons. As a result, on titration with a base, they exhibit two equivalence points in the titration curve. During titration, the species H2M, HM−, and M2− will be present in the solution at different points. The fractions of H2M, HM−, and M2− present at the various instances of the titration are denoted by α0, α1, and α2, respectively. A graph with the alpha values is plotted against the volume of base added during titration. Here, a...

Nucleic acids are the most important macromolecules for the continuity of life. They carry the cell's genetic blueprint and carry instructions for its functioning. DNA and RNA The two main types of nucleic acids are deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) and ribonucleic acid (RNA). DNA is the genetic material in all living organisms, ranging from single-celled bacteria to multicellular mammals. It is in the nucleus of eukaryotes and in the organelles, chloroplasts, and mitochondria. In prokaryotes, the...

Acids are classified by the number of protons per molecule that they can give up in a reaction. Acids such as HCl, HNO3, and HCN that contain one ionizable hydrogen atom in each molecule are called monoprotic acids. Their reactions with water are: Monoprotic acids: Reactions with water HCl (aq) + H2O (l) ⟶ H3O+ (aq) + Cl− (aq) HNO3 (aq) + H2O (l) ⟶ H3O+ (aq) + NO3− (aq) HCN (aq) + H2O (l) ⇌ H3O+ (aq) + CN− (aq) Even though it contains four hydrogen...
