Polymer Dispersity

Polymer dispersity is a measure of the breadth of molar-mass distribution in a polymer sample, revealing how uniform its chain lengths are. It is expressed as the dispersity, Đ = Mw/Mn, where the weight-average molar mass emphasizes larger chains and the number-average molar mass represents the average chain size; differences in initiation, propagation, termination, and chain-transfer events create this distribution. In chemistry, dispersity helps evaluate polymerization control and predict material behavior, including viscosity, processability, strength, and thermal response. Measuring and tuning dispersity supports the design of polymers for coatings, plastics, adhesives, and advanced functional materials.

The word polymer is derived from the Greek words “poly” which means “many” and “mer” which means “parts”. Polymers are long chains of molecules composed of repeating units of smaller molecules, known as monomers. They either occur naturally, such as DNA and proteins, or can be constructed synthetically, like plastics. They have varied structural characteristics, such as linear chains, branched chains, or complex networks, that contribute to the properties that they exhibit. Additionally,...

Ecology is the study of how organisms interact with their environment and with one another. An important aspect of ecology is understanding where species are found and how individuals are distributed within those areas. The geographic range of a species refers to the total area where its members are located, while dispersion describes the pattern of spacing of individuals within that range.Geographic Range and Dispersion PatternsWithin a species’ geographic range, individuals may be distributed...

Adapting Taylor Dispersion to Measure the Dispersion Coefficient of Electrolyte Solutions via an Accessible Microfluidic Setup

2025

Here, we present a protocol to adapt the Taylor dispersion experiment to the microscale using microchannels fabricated in-house with a desktop craft cutter. The experimental platform can be used to compute the diffusion coefficient of single-species passive tracers and to visualize multispecies ion interaction and separation.
