Racemization

Racemization is the chemical process in which an optically active substance is converted into a mixture containing equal amounts of its enantiomers, reducing or eliminating net optical rotation. It occurs when the stereocenter temporarily loses its three-dimensional configuration, often through formation of a planar achiral intermediate followed by reprotonation or bond reformation from either side. In chemistry, racemization helps explain changes in stereochemical purity during reactions, storage, and synthesis. Studying its rate and conditions is important for controlling pharmaceutical quality, interpreting reaction mechanisms, and preserving the desired activity of chiral compounds.

Racemic Mixtures and the Resolution of Enantiomers

2025

A racemic mixture, or racemate, is an equimolar mixture of enantiomers of a molecule that can be separated using their unique interaction with chiral molecules or media. Racemic mixtures are denoted by the (±)- prefix. This ‘optical rotation descriptor’ applies to the whole solution of a racemic mixture rather than a specific stereoisomer. Enantiomers typically have the same physical and chemical properties. Hence, they are not easily separable. However, enantiomers can exhibit different...

Approximately half of all proteins contain metals and it is estimated that up to one third of all proteins rely on metal-containing active sites to function. Proteins that feature metals, called metalloproteins, play a vital role in a variety of cell functions that are necessary for life. Metalloproteins...

Source: Vy M. Dong and Faben Cruz, Department of Chemistry, University of California, Irvine, CA This experiment will demonstrate the concept of organocatalysis by illustrating the proper setup of a reaction that utilizes enamine catalysis. Organocatalysis is a form of catalysis that uses substoichiometric amounts of small organic molecules to accelerate reactions. This type of catalysis is complementary to other forms of catalysis such as transition metal or biocatalysis. Transition metal...

Source: Vy M. Dong and Diane Le, Department of Chemistry, University of California, Irvine, CA This experiment will demonstrate the use of a polarimeter, which is an instrument used to determine the optical rotation of a sample. Optical rotation is the degree to which a sample will rotate polarized light. Optically active samples will rotate the plane of light clockwise (dextrorotatory), designated as d or (+), or counterclockwise (levorotatory), designated as l or (−).
