Roman Numeral Notation

Roman numeral notation is a number-writing system that uses symbols such as I, V, X, and L to represent values; in chemistry, it commonly identifies the oxidation state of an element in a compound. In Stock nomenclature, the numeral appears in parentheses after a metal’s name, such as iron(III) chloride, and indicates that iron has a +3 oxidation state rather than specifying the number of atoms present. Chemists determine the appropriate numeral by balancing ionic charges or assigning oxidation numbers from a compound’s formula. This convention distinguishes compounds with variable-valence elements and supports accurate naming, formula writing, and reaction interpretation.

Numerical Cognition: More or Less

Source: Laboratories of Nicholaus Noles and Judith Danovitch—University of Louisville One of the goals of the modern education system is to teach children mathematical literacy. They are taught to add, subtract, multiply, and divide, and this base knowledge is used to support learning about geometry, algebra, calculus, physics, and statistics. School-aged children usually acquire these skills in formal educational settings, but the foundation of mathematical understanding is developed much...

Summation Notation

Sigma notation, also known as summation notation, provides a concise method for representing the sum of a sequence of terms that follow a regular pattern. It utilizes the uppercase Greek letter sigma (∑), A typical expression is:In this form, k the index of summation is 1, the starting value, and n the ending value. The term ak represents the general term of the sequence. For example, the increasing sequence 5, 7, 9, ..., 23 over 10 terms can be expressed as:This simplifies the representation...

In engineering applications, the representation of the numerical value is critical. Presenting or reporting the answer is one of the essential parts of engineering practices. Numerical calculations are performed using handheld calculators or computers since numerically accurate answers are always preferred. The solution to a problem is obtained using different methods. While manually solving algebraic symbols is one of the most common methods, the graphical method is often preferred. Computers...

¹H NMR: Pople Notation

The Pople nomenclature system classifies spin systems based on the difference between their chemical shifts. Coupled spins are denoted by capital letters with subscripts indicating the number of equivalent nuclei. When the coupled nuclei have well-separated chemical shifts, they are assigned letters that are far apart in the alphabet, such as A and X. When the difference in chemical shifts is small, coupled nuclei are named using adjacent letters of the alphabet (AB, MN, or XY). A proton...

Pilot and Numeric Relaying

Pilot relaying is a type of differential protection used in power systems. It compares electrical quantities at the terminals of equipment via a communication channel instead of direct relay interconnection. This method is essential for transmission lines where the terminals are far apart, typically up to 80 km for lines with 69 to 115 kV ratings. Four types of communication channels are used for pilot relaying: Pilot Wires: These are separate electrical circuits operating at DC, 50 to 60 Hz,...
