Scientific Theory

Scientific theory is a well-supported explanatory framework that organizes observations, connects evidence, and generates testable predictions about the natural world. In chemistry, theories use models, mathematical relationships, and experimentally measured patterns to explain how atoms, molecules, and energy behave, while new observations can refine or challenge those explanations. Atomic theory, chemical bonding theory, thermodynamic theory, and quantum theory provide foundations for interpreting reactions, molecular structure, material properties, and energy transfer. Understanding how theories develop helps students and researchers evaluate evidence, design experiments, predict chemical behavior, and apply established principles to fields such as materials science, medicine, and environmental research.

Scientific Laws In science, a law is defined as a concise, verbal or mathematical, statement that summarizes a vast number of experimental observations. It describes or predicts some facets of the natural world that always remain the same under the same conditions. Scientific Theory A scientific theory is a unifying principle that provides a well-substantiated and testable explanation of aspects of nature and provides the reason for why things happen. Well-established theories are the...

The scientific method is used to solve problems and explain phenomena. The development of the scientific method coincided with changes in philosophy underpinning scientific discovery, radically transforming the views of society about nature. During the European Renaissance, individuals such as Francis Bacon, Galileo, and Isaac Newton formalized the concept of the scientific method and put it into practice. Although the scientific method has been revised since its early conceptions, much of the...

Demonstrating the Scientific Method with Tree Branches ExpandObtain branches containing a few dozen typical leaves from five different local tree species. The branches should represent a range of leaf and tree types. Label each branch and leaf with their species name. Distribute the branches to the students, so that each student has access to all five species. Provide some background information about the environment from which each branch was collected.

Observation and Background Research ExpandNOTE: The first two steps in the scientific process involve studying and observing natural phenomena of interest. Observe the leaves and branches of the individual plant species. Each species comes from a different environment. Compare each branch to one another and record your observations about any qualitative similarities or differences. Click Here to download Table A Use leaf clippers to cut the leaves from the branches. Make additional qualitative...

Chemistry is an empirical science. Scientists often pose questions to understand the chemistry in everyday life and seek answers to these questions. To achieve this, scientists follow a definitive series of steps that together make up the Scientific Method. This approach involves making observations, asking questions, building a hypothesis, conducting experiments, analyzing results, and forming a conclusion. Observation and Question The first step in the scientific method is observing a...
