Sulfuric Acid Catalyst

A sulfuric acid catalyst is sulfuric acid used to accelerate a chemical reaction without being permanently consumed, making it valuable in synthetic and industrial chemistry. Its strong acidity enables proton transfer, activating functional groups and lowering the energy barrier for bond-making or bond-breaking steps; concentrated sulfuric acid can also promote dehydration by removing water. In organic chemistry, it commonly catalyzes esterification and alkene hydration, supporting the production of fuels, solvents, and other chemical products. Because sulfuric acid is highly corrosive and concentrated forms can act as oxidizing agents, reaction conditions must be carefully controlled to limit side reactions and protect equipment.

The Sulfur Cycle

2019

Sulfur, an important element in the chemical makeup of proteins, is recycled through the atmosphere and aquatic and terrestrial environments. Found in the atmosphere as sulfur dioxide (SO2), sulfur is released by decaying organisms, weathered rocks, geothermal vents, volcanos, and burning fossil fuels. It is deposited into the ecosystem, cycled through the biotic community, and either released back into the atmosphere as gas or deposited in marine sediment for long-term storage and eventual...

HKUST-1 as a Heterogeneous Catalyst for the Synthesis of Vanillin

2016

The conversion of trans-ferulic acid to vanillin was achieved by heterogeneous catalysis. HKUST-1 was employed in this synthesis and the essential step in the catalytic process was the generation of unsaturated metal sites. Thus, when the catalyst was activated under vacuum, full vanillin conversion (yield of 95%) was obtained.

Sulfur Assimilation

2025

Sulfur is an essential element in biological systems, contributing to synthesizing key biomolecules, including amino acids such as cysteine and methionine, and cofactors such as coenzyme A and biotin. Microorganisms primarily assimilate sulfur as sulfate (SO₄²⁻) from the environment, which must undergo a series of biochemical transformations before it can be incorporated into cellular components. As sulfate is highly oxidized, it must undergo assimilatory sulfate reduction to become...
