Threaded-rod Extruder

A threaded-rod extruder is a continuous processing device that conveys, melts, mixes, and shapes materials, making it important for studying and producing polymeric and chemical formulations. Inside a heated barrel, a rotating threaded rod moves feed material forward while compression, shear, and controlled temperature generate pressure and promote melting or mixing. In chemistry, threaded-rod extrusion supports polymer blending, additive incorporation, devolatilization, and reactive extrusion, in which heat and mechanical energy help drive chemical transformations during processing. The method enables consistent composition and scalable production while allowing researchers to investigate how formulation, residence time, temperature, and shear influence material properties.

Inducing Ischemic Stroke via Middle Cerebral Artery Occlusion Using a Thread Bolt

2025

This video demonstrates the process of inducing ischemic stroke in a rat model by occluding the middle cerebral artery (MCA) using a thread bolt. The procedure involves ligating the carotid arteries, inserting a thread bolt into the external carotid artery, and blocking blood flow from the MCA to the brain, leading to neuronal death and mimicking an ischemic stroke.

Here we present a protocol to measure the modulus of rupture of an extruded catalyst and the breakage of said catalyst extrudates by collision against a surface or by compression in a fixed bed.

Quantification of Tear Volume in an Autoimmune Dry Eye Rat Model using the Phenol Red Thread

2025

This video demonstrates the phenol red thread test to determine tear volume in an autoimmune dry eye rat model. The pH-sensitive acidic phenol red thread changes color when it comes in contact with the alkaline tears. The shorter length of color change in the phenol red thread corresponds to reduced tear volume.

Source: Kay Stewart, RVT, RLATG, CMAR; Valerie A. Schroeder, RVT, RLATG. University of Notre Dame, IN Animal records must be accurately maintained to ensure that data collection is correct. Records range from maintaining information on cage cards to having a detailed database with all of the relevant information on each animal. The primary component of recordkeeping is the individual identification of research animals. There are a variety of methods suitable for identifying mice and rats. This...
