Biologic Medicines

Biologic medicines are therapeutic products made from or using living cells and organisms, including proteins, antibodies, vaccines, and gene-based treatments. Unlike many small-molecule drugs, they have complex molecular structures and act through highly specific interactions with targets such as receptors, enzymes, or immune signals; recombinant cells can produce these medicines under controlled conditions. In clinical practice, biologics can replace missing proteins, block disease-driving pathways, stimulate protective immunity, or modify abnormal immune responses. They have transformed treatment for cancer, autoimmune disease, infectious disease, and genetic disorders, while requiring careful characterization, manufacturing, storage, and monitoring for immune reactions.

What is Conservation Biology?

2019

Conservation biology is a scientific field that focuses on the preservation of biodiversity in order to protect ecosystems while meeting the needs of the human population. Humans require properly functioning ecosystems to maintain our supply of natural resources, including food, medicines, and building materials. Ecosystems also perform critical services, such as purifying our air and water. A large body of evidence indicates that such ecosystem services depend on biodiversity. Furthermore,...

An Introduction to Stem Cell Biology

2023

Cells that can differentiate into a variety of cell types, known as stem cells, are at the center of one of the most exciting fields of science today. Stem cell biologists are working to understand the basic mechanisms that regulate how these cells function. These researchers are also interested in harnessing the remarkable potential of stem cells to treat human diseases. Here, JoVE presents an introduction to the captivating world of stem cell biology. We begin with a timeline of landmark...

This video presents synthetic biology and its role in bioengineering. Synthetic biology refers to the methods used to genetically modify organisms in order to make them capable of producing large quantities of a product. This product could be a protein that the cell already makes or a new protein that has been encoded in a newly-inserted DNA sequence. Here, we discuss how an organism's genetic material is modified using transformation or transfection. Then, the process is shown in the...

In this video, we show a procedure for an accurate biolistic delivery of reagents into live tissue with a novel miniature gene gun. We are knocking down the expression of the axon guidance molecule Netrin in leech embryos by delivering molecules of dsRNA into the ventral body wall and ganglia of single segments.
