Electronic Thermometer

An electronic thermometer is a digital instrument that measures temperature and displays the result numerically, making it important for rapid, consistent clinical assessment. It typically uses a thermistor, whose electrical resistance changes with temperature; internal circuitry converts this change into a temperature reading after the probe contacts a measurement site. In clinical practice, electronic thermometers support the detection and monitoring of fever, hypothermia, and changes in patient condition. Their fast readings, clear displays, and compatibility with different probe designs help healthcare professionals obtain and document temperature measurements efficiently across routine examinations, triage, and ongoing patient care.

Thermometers and Temperature Scales

2023

Any physical property that depends consistently and reproducibly on temperature can be used as the basis of a thermometer. For example, volume increases with temperature for most substances. This property is the basis for the common alcohol thermometer and the original mercury thermometers. Other properties used to measure temperature include electrical resistance, color, and the emission of infrared radiation. As many physical properties depend on temperature, the variety of thermometers is...

Gas Thermometers and the Kelvin Scale

2023

The definition of temperature in terms of molecular motion suggests that there should be a lowest possible temperature, where the average kinetic energy of molecules is zero (or the minimum allowed by quantum mechanics). Experiments confirm the existence of such a temperature, called absolute zero. An absolute temperature scale is one whose zero point is absolute zero. Such scales are convenient in science because several physical quantities, such as the volume of an ideal gas, are directly...

Electron Carriers

Electron carriers can be thought of as electron shuttles. These compounds can easily accept electrons (i.e., be reduced) or lose them (i.e., be oxidized). They play an essential role in energy production because cellular respiration is contingent on the flow of electrons. Over the many stages of cellular respiration, glucose breaks down into carbon dioxide and water. Electron carriers pick up electrons lost by glucose in these reactions, temporarily storing and releasing them into the electron...
