Masks Respirators

Masks and respirators are personal protective equipment designed to reduce exposure to infectious droplets, airborne particles, and other hazards in clinical settings. Masks typically provide a loose-fitting barrier that helps contain respiratory emissions, whereas respirators form a close facial seal and use specialized filter material to remove particles from inhaled air. Effective respirator performance depends on proper selection, fit testing, seal checks, and consistent use, while masks may support source control and protect against splashes. These devices help reduce transmission risks during patient care, aerosol-generating procedures, and outbreaks, making correct use an important component of clinical infection prevention.

Quantifying Respiration using Microrespirometers ExpandNOTE: In this experiment, you will measure the rate of cellular respiration for germinating seeds by measuring the rate of exchange for oxygen. As oxygen is consumed to provide energy, germinating seeds release carbon dioxide. This carbon dioxide is absorbed by potassium carbonate and thus the overall gaseous pressure of the respirometer will be reduced. HYPOTHESES: The experimental hypothesis is that germinating seeds will show a greater...

Autotrophs and Heterotrophs Living organisms require a continuous input of energy to maintain cellular and organismal functions such as growth, repair, movement, defense, and reproduction. Cells can only use chemical energy to fuel their functions, therefore they need to harvest energy from chemical bonds of biomolecules, such as sugars and lipids. Autotrophic organisms, namely plants, algae, and photosynthetic and chemosynthetic bacteria, convert inorganic materials into such biomolecules by...

Source: Laboratory of Jonathan Flombaum—Johns Hopkins University Visual masking is a term used by perceptual scientists to refer to a wide range of phenomena in which in an image is presented but not perceived by an observer because of the presentation of a second image. There are several different kinds of masking, many of them relatively intuitive and unsurprising. But one surprising and important type of masking is called Object Substitution Masking. It has been a focus of research in vision...

Here we explore contralateral tactile masking between the forearms in which tactile detection thresholds are modulated by vibration applied to a remote site. The details of which remote sites have an effect can tell us about how the body is represented in the brain.

Overview of the Respiratory System and Energy Production Energy production in the human body is primarily fueled by oxidation, a process where food molecules are burned by combining with oxygen to produce carbon dioxide and water. This vital metabolic process sustains life, and is supported intricately by the respiratory system. Structure and Function of the Respiratory System: The respiratory system is a complex network of structures that includes the nose, oropharynx, larynx, trachea,...
