Ppe Protocol

A PPE protocol is a standardized set of procedures for selecting, wearing, removing, and disposing of personal protective equipment to reduce exposure to infectious agents, hazardous substances, or other clinical risks. In healthcare, it works by matching barriers such as gloves, gowns, masks, respirators, and eye protection to the anticipated route and level of exposure, while correct fit, donning, doffing, and hand hygiene help prevent contamination. Clinical teams use PPE protocols during patient assessment, specimen collection, surgery, isolation care, and environmental cleaning. Consistent implementation protects patients and workers, limits healthcare-associated transmission, and supports safer, more reliable clinical practice.

The sequence of removing or doffing PPE starts with the gloves, as they are the most contaminated. Next is removal of the face shield or goggles, as they would interfere with removing other PPE. Then remove the gown, followed by the mask or respirator. Perform hand hygiene between steps if hands become contaminated and immediately after removing all PPE. Generally, the outside front and sleeves of the isolation gown, the goggles or the mask, the respirator, and the face shield are contaminated.
