Controlled Release

Controlled release is the engineered delivery of an active substance at a planned rate, location, or time rather than all at once. It works by regulating transport through a carrier or device, often using diffusion, dissolution, degradation, or a response to conditions such as pH, temperature, or moisture. In engineering, controlled-release systems include polymer matrices, coatings, capsules, and implantable devices designed to improve performance and reduce waste. Applications range from drug delivery and tissue engineering to fertilizers, pesticides, and industrial additives, where sustained exposure, precise dosing, and improved stability can enhance safety, efficiency, and reliability.

Scaffolds for tissue engineering need to recapitulate the complex biochemical and biophysical microenvironment of the cellular niche. Here, we show the use of interfacial polyelectrolyte complexation fibers as a platform to create composite, multi-component polymeric scaffolds with sustained biochemical release.

We present a facile method to fabricate a biodegradable gelatin-based drug release platform that is magneto-thermally responsive. This was achieved by incorporating superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles and poly(N-isopropylacrylamide-co-acrylamide) within a spherical gelatin micro-network crosslinked by genipin, in conjunction with an alternating magnetic field application system.

This manuscript describes the preparation of magnetic and thermal-sensitive microgels via a temperature-induced emulsion without chemical reaction. These sensitive microgels were synthesized by mixing poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAAm), polyethylenimine (PEI) and Fe3O4-NH2 nanoparticles for the potential use in magnetically and thermally triggered drug-release.

Here, we describe a protocol for the application of a novel, slow-release ClO2 product that reduces spoilage and extends the shelf life of fresh fruit. The slow-release ClO2 product was added to standard commercial grape tomato packaging and tested against Escherichia coli and Alternaria alternata.
