Geometrical Discontinuity

Geometrical discontinuity is an abrupt change in a component’s shape, such as a hole, notch, keyway, thread, or sharp corner, that alters how loads are distributed. Under tension, bending, or torsion, these features disturb otherwise uniform stress fields and create localized stress concentrations, where peak stresses exceed the nominal applied stress. Engineering analysis uses stress-concentration factors, numerical simulation, and design modifications such as larger fillets or smoother transitions to evaluate and reduce these effects. Understanding geometrical discontinuities helps engineers improve strength, fatigue life, fracture resistance, and reliability in mechanical, civil, aerospace, and structural components.

Discontinuing Intravenous Fluids and a Peripheral Intravenous Line

Source: Madeline Lassche, MSNEd, RN and Katie Baraki, MSN, RN, College of Nursing, University of Utah, UT Intravenous (IV) fluid administration and peripheral IV catheters (PIVs) may be discontinued for a number of reasons. The most common reason for discontinuing IV fluids is that the patient has returned to normal body fluid volume (euvolemia) and is able to maintain adequate oral fluid intake or is being discharged from the hospital. In addition, the Centers for Disease Control Guidelines...

Geometric Mean

2023

The mean is a measure of the central tendency of a data set. In some data sets, the data is inherently multiplicative, and the arithmetic mean is not useful. For example, the human population multiplies with time, and so does the credit amount of financial investment, as the interest compounds over successive time intervals. In cases of multiplicative data, the geometric mean is used for statistical analysis. First, the product of all the elements is taken. Then, if there are n elements in the...

Geometric Sequences

In systems where values diminish by a constant proportion at each stage, the resulting sequence follows a geometric structure. Each new value in the sequence is obtained by applying a fixed multiplier to the preceding term. This regular, proportional decline type is often used to represent processes involving gradual loss, such as energy dissipation or reduction in amplitude over time. When analyzing the total effect of such a process across unlimited iterations, the series of values is referred...

Separation of Bacteria by Capsule Amount Using a Discontinuous Density Gradient

2025

Source: Feltwell, T., et.al. Separating Bacteria by Capsule Amount Using a Discontinuous Density Gradient. J. Vis. Exp. (2019)This video demonstrates the use of a discontinuous density gradient to separate bacterial strains based on capsule amount. By centrifuging a transposon mutant library through the gradient, bacteria with different capsule densities localize to distinct layers. The separated fractions can then be collected for downstream analysis.

Improper Integrals: Discontinuous Integrands

Evaluating Areas Under Curves with DiscontinuitiesA definite integral is considered improper when the integrand is discontinuous at one of the limits of integration. This occurs when the function is undefined or becomes infinite at an endpoint, making the corresponding region under the curve unbounded. Such behavior is commonly associated with vertical asymptotes at the boundary of the interval. To properly define and evaluate these integrals, a limiting process is used to determine whether a...
