Hardened Layer Thickness

Hardened layer thickness is the depth of a material’s surface region that has been strengthened or made more wear resistant through a surface-hardening treatment. In engineering steels, processes such as carburizing or nitriding alter the near-surface composition, while quenching can transform the affected region into hard martensite, creating a gradual hardness profile from the surface toward the core. Measuring this depth helps engineers assess load-bearing capacity, fatigue resistance, and service life in components such as gears, shafts, and bearings. The value guides heat-treatment control, quality inspection, and selection of materials for applications requiring a hard surface with a tougher, more ductile interior.

Tests of Hardened Concrete in Tension

2023

Source: Roberto Leon, Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, Virginia Tech, Blacksburg, VA In a previous laboratory focused on concrete in compression, we observed that concrete can withstand very large stresses under uniaxial compressive forces. However, the failures observed were not compressive failures but failures along shear planes where maximum tensile forces occur. Thus, it is important to understand the behavior of concrete in tension and particularly its maximum strength...

Compression Tests on Hardened Concrete

Source: Roberto Leon, Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, Virginia Tech, Blacksburg, VA There are two distinct stages in a construction project involving concrete. The first stage involves batching, transporting, and casting fresh concrete. At this stage, the material is viscous, and the workability and finishability are the key performance criteria. The second stage occurs when the hydration process begins shortly after the concrete is placed in the form, and the concrete will...

Murine full-thickness skin transplantation is a well-established model to study rejection in an alloimmune setting. Here, we provide a tutorial of each step involved in performing a BALB/c-->C57BL/6 full-thickness skin transplant.

Layer-by-layer Collagen Deposition in Microfluidic Devices for Microtissue Stabilization

The creation of functional microtissues within microfluidic devices requires the stabilization of cell phenotypes by adapting traditional cell culture techniques to the limited spatial dimensions in microdevices. Modification of collagen allows the layer-by-layer deposition of ultrathin collagen assemblies that can stabilize primary cells, such as hepatocytes, as microfluidic tissue models.
