Load-tap-changing Transformers

Load-tap-changing transformers are power transformers that regulate voltage while remaining connected to an energized electrical network, helping maintain stable service as demand and system conditions change. Their on-load tap changer adjusts the transformer’s turns ratio by selecting different winding connections, using switching and transition components to transfer between taps without interrupting current or creating damaging short circuits. This capability supports voltage control in transmission and distribution systems, compensates for fluctuations in load and supply, and improves power quality and network stability. Engineers use these transformers in substations and industrial facilities where continuous operation and reliable voltage regulation are essential.

Single Phase Transformers

Source: Ali Bazzi, Department of Electrical Engineering, University of Connecticut, Storrs, CT. Transformers are stationary electric machines that step up or down AC voltage. They are typically formed of primary and secondary coils or windings, where the voltage on the primary is stepped up or down at the secondary, or the other way around. When a voltage is applied to one of the windings and current flows in that winding, flux is induced in the magnetic core, coupling both windings. With an AC...

Identifying Protein-protein Interaction in Drosophila Adult Heads by Tandem Affinity Purification (TAP)

Drosophila is famous for its powerful genetic manipulation, but not for its suitability of in-depth biochemical analysis. Here we present a TAP-based procedure to identify interacting partners of any protein of interest from the fly brain. This procedure can potentially lead to new avenues of research.

Bacterial Transformation - Concepts

Background In early 20th century, pneumonia was accountable for a large portion of infectious disease deaths1. In order to develop an effective vaccine against pneumonia, Frederick Griffith set out to study two different strains of the Streptococcus pneumoniae: a non-virulent strain with a rough appearance (R-strain) and a virulent strain with a smooth appearance (S-strain) due to an outer polysaccharide capsule2. This outer layer of the S-strain bacteria enabled them to withstand the host...

Bacterial Transformation: Electroporation

The term “transformation” refers cellular ingestion of foreign DNA. In nature, transformation can occur in certain types of bacteria. In molecular biology, however, transformation is artificially induced through the creation of pores in the bacterial cell walls. Bacterial cells that are able to take up DNA from the environment are called competent cells. Electrocompetent cells can be produced in the laboratory and transformation of these cells can be achieve via the application of an...
