Magnetic Gradient Reversal

Magnetic gradient reversal is the controlled change in the direction of a magnetic-field gradient, causing magnetic forces to act in the opposite spatial direction. In an engineered system, reversing currents in gradient coils or electromagnets changes how field strength varies with position; for a magnetic dipole or responsive particle, the resulting force follows the reversed gradient when its magnetic moment remains aligned with the field. This principle enables bidirectional manipulation, transport, positioning, and separation of magnetic materials and particles. It is relevant to magnetic actuators, particle-handling systems, sensing platforms, and imaging technologies that require precise control of force direction.

2013

The gradient echo memory is a protocol for storing optical quantum states of light in atomic ensembles. Quantum memory is a key element of a quantum repeater, which can extend the range of quantum key distribution. We outline the operation of the scheme when implemented in a 3-level atomic ensemble.

Source: Yong P. Chen, PhD, Department of Physics & Astronomy, College of Science, Purdue University, West Lafayette, IN Magnetic fields can be generated by moving charges, such as an electrical current. The magnetic field generated by a current can be calculated from the Maxwell equation. In addition, magnetic objects such as bar magnets can also generate magnetic fields due to microscopic dynamics of charges inside the material. Magnetic fields will exert magnetic force on other moving...

Density Gradient Ultracentrifugation

2023

Density gradient ultracentrifugation is a common technique used to isolate and purify biomolecules and cell structures. This technique exploits the fact that, in suspension, particles that are more dense than the solvent will sediment, while those that are less dense will float. A high-speed ultracentrifuge is used to accelerate this process in order to separate biomolecules within a density gradient, which can be established by layering liquids of decreasing density in a centrifuge tube. The...

Source: Rustad, M., et.al. Synthesis of Infectious Bacteriophages in an E. coli-based Cell-free Expression System. J. Vis. Exp. (2017)This video demonstrates the purification of bacteriophages from a suspension containing host bacterial debris using a sucrose density gradient. It shows how the density gradient separates phages by buoyant density, enabling recovery of a visible band for resuspension and further analysis.

Gradient Polymerase Chain Reaction to Determine the Optimum Annealing Temperature

2025

This video demonstrates the gradient polymerase chain reaction for optimization of the annealing temperature of primers, which sets gradient annealing temperature along wells. The effect of different annealing temperatures is determined by the yield of amplified products that helps to optimize the reaction condition.
