Pivot Pin

A pivot pin is a cylindrical engineering component that supports and guides rotational movement between connected parts while transmitting mechanical loads. Installed through aligned holes or bushings, it acts as a fixed or retained axis, allowing one member to rotate relative to another while resisting shear, bending, and bearing forces. Pivot pins are used in hinges, suspension systems, lifting mechanisms, construction equipment, and machine linkages, where their diameter, material, surface finish, lubrication, and fit influence strength, wear, alignment, and service life. Proper design and maintenance help reduce friction, prevent excessive play, and ensure reliable motion under repeated loading.

Pivot Bearings

2025

In mechanical systems, bearings are crucial in facilitating relative motion between two components while minimizing friction and wear. They help distribute various loads (radial, axial or a combination of both loads) across machinery parts, ensuring smooth and efficient operation. A pivot bearing is a specialized type of bearing designed to support axial loads on a rotating shaft. The bearing surface, or the pivot, is positioned at the end of a shaft to support the axial thrust. The pivot may...

Euler's Formula for Pin-Ended Columns

2024

In structural engineering, the stability of columns under compressive axial loads is a critical consideration, described as buckling. A typical example involves a column PQ, which is pin-connected at both ends and subjected to a centric axial load F applied at one end, with a reaction force of F' = -F at the other end. Here, it is crucial to understand that when an applied load exceeds the critical load, buckling occurs as the system becomes unstable. To calculate the critical load, envision...

2015

Flight in insects is influenced by a number of factors and the propensity to disperse is an important variable in understanding insect ecology and biological control strategies. We describe the construction and use of a simple, relatively inexpensive, and flexible flight mill for measuring parameters of tethered flight in insects.
