Potassium Chloride

Potassium chloride is an ionic compound composed of potassium and chloride ions, valued across chemical, agricultural, and engineering applications. In its solid form, electrostatic forces organize K⁺ and Cl⁻ in a crystal lattice; when dissolved in water, the lattice separates and the mobile ions enable electrical conductivity and ion transport. Engineers use potassium chloride in fertilizer production, mineral processing, brine formulations, and drilling fluids, where its solubility and ionic behavior influence fluid density, conductivity, and process performance. Understanding these properties supports the design and control of materials, separation systems, and industrial operations involving aqueous solutions.

Source: Josiah, S. S., et al. Study of the Functions and Activities of Neuronal K-Cl Co-Transporter KCC2 Using Western Blotting. J. Vis. Exp. (2022).The video demonstrates the steps for detecting and quantifying phosphorylated potassium-chloride cotransporter 2 (KCC2) protein in a cell lysate. This process involves immunoprecipitation to isolate phosphorylated KCC2 and chemiluminescence to quantify the isolated protein.

Soil Nutrient Analysis: Nitrogen, Phosphorus, and Potassium

2023

Source: Laboratories of Margaret Workman and Kimberly Frye - Depaul University In this experiment, three soil macronutrients are chemically extracted, combined with color-based reagents, then analyzed using color to determine the nutrient concentration present in the soil sample. Nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium are the main components of soil fertilizer. These methods isolate each nutrient from the soil into a solution that can be analyzed using turbidity and color to determine the...

Regulation of Sodium and Potassium

2024

The regulation of sodium and potassium ion concentrations in the human body is a complex process governed primarily by hormones such as aldosterone, antidiuretic hormone (ADH), and atrial natriuretic peptide (ANP). Sodium Regulation Sodium ions make up approximately 90% of extracellular cations, with a normal blood plasma concentration of 136–148 mEq/L. A decrease in blood volume and pressure triggers the release of renin from granular cells in the juxtaglomerular complex (JGC), primarily in...
