Resistance Matching

Resistance matching is the practice of selecting or adjusting resistances in an electrical system so that a source, circuit, or load operates under a desired electrical condition. In maximum power transfer, a load receives the greatest available power when its resistance equals the source’s Thevenin resistance; in measurement and signal circuits, matching can also reduce unwanted loading and preserve predictable voltage behavior. Engineers apply this principle when designing power-transfer networks, sensor interfaces, amplifiers, and test systems, balancing delivered power, efficiency, voltage levels, and measurement accuracy. Understanding resistance matching helps predict circuit performance and guides component selection, troubleshooting, and system optimization.

Sign Test for Matched Pairs

2025

The sign test for matched pairs offers a robust method for comparing two paired samples, often for the effects of an intervention in one of them. This method is very useful in situations where the underlying distribution of the data is unknown. The test compares two related samples—often pre- and post-treatment measurements on the same subjects—to determine if there are significant differences in their median values. To conduct the sign test, we first calculate the differences in value between...

Resistivity

When a voltage is applied to a conductor, an electrical field is generated, and charges in the conductor feel the force due to the electrical field. The current density that results depends on the electrical field and the properties of the material. In some materials, including metals at a given temperature, the current density is approximately proportional to the electrical field. In these cases, the current density can be modeled as: where σ is the electrical conductivity and is represented...

Resistance

When a current moves through any conductor, the conductor causes some level of difficulty for the current to flow. The measure of that difficulty is known as the resistance of the material and is represented by R. Every material has its own resistance. In the case of conductors, heat is emitted whenever a current passes through them. Resistance depends on the resistivity of the material. Resistivity is a characteristic of the material used to fabricate electrical components, whereas the...

Testing for Metacognitive Responding Using an Odor-based Delayed Match-to-Sample Test in Rats

This protocol describes a method for investigating the possibility of metamemory, or memory awareness, in rodents. The odor-based delayed-matching-to-sample paradigm is a novel, ecologically-relevant behavioral test useful for determining the extent to which rodents can adaptively respond based on cognitively monitoring the strength of their memory states.
