Semantic Consistency

Semantic consistency is the preservation of the same meaning for terms, symbols, data, and relationships across an engineering system, its documentation, and its models. It works by using shared definitions, controlled vocabularies, explicit relationships, and traceability checks to detect conflicting interpretations as information moves between teams, tools, or development stages. In systems engineering, software development, and data integration, semantic consistency helps align requirements with designs, interfaces, simulations, and test results. Maintaining it reduces ambiguity, prevents integration errors, supports reliable knowledge exchange, and improves the accuracy of automated analysis and decision-making throughout the engineering lifecycle.

Language: The N400 in Semantic Incongruity

2023

Source: Laboratories of Sarah I. Gimbel and Jonas T. Kaplan— University of Southern California Understanding language is one of the most complex cognitive tasks that humans are capable of. Given the incredible amount of possible choices when combining individual words to form meaning in sentences, it is crucial that the brain is able to identify when words form coherent combinations and when an anomaly appears that undermines meaning. Extensive research has shown that certain scalp-recorded...

We present a protocol to explore the relative activation sequence of phonology and semantics in visual word recognition. The results show that consistent with interactive accounts, semantic and phonological representations may be processed interactively, and higher-level linguistic representations may affect early processing.

Using event-related EEG potentials (ERPs), we investigate the effects of antipsychotic medications on abnormal semantic brain activations in healthy individuals with schizotypal traits. We use ERPs to track distinct changes in brain activity, shedding insight into the cognitive processes associated with semantic categorization.
