Semantic Guidance

Semantic guidance is an approach that uses meaning, context, and relationships among information to direct engineering systems toward appropriate actions or solutions. It works by converting observations, requirements, or user instructions into semantic representations, then applying those representations to constrain interpretation, planning, design, or decision-making. In engineering, semantic guidance can connect high-level goals with low-level system operations, helping robots, autonomous platforms, software tools, and human-machine interfaces respond more consistently to changing conditions. By making system behavior more interpretable and aligned with intended objectives, it supports efficient design workflows, reliable automation, and the development of intelligent systems that can use contextual information rather than relying only on numerical signals.

Language: The N400 in Semantic Incongruity

2023

Source: Laboratories of Sarah I. Gimbel and Jonas T. Kaplan— University of Southern California Understanding language is one of the most complex cognitive tasks that humans are capable of. Given the incredible amount of possible choices when combining individual words to form meaning in sentences, it is crucial that the brain is able to identify when words form coherent combinations and when an anomaly appears that undermines meaning. Extensive research has shown that certain scalp-recorded...

2016

This protocol describes a bioprinting methodology using an automated robotic depositing system that incorporates etched topographical guidance cues with the precision deposition of a cell bearing hydrogel bioink. The printed cells are directly delivered to the etched features and are able to sense and orientate with them.

We describe here the use of a pH-sensitive green fluorescent protein variant, pHluorin, to study the spatio-temporal dynamics of axon guidance receptors trafficking at the cell surface. The pHluorin-tagged receptor is expressed both in cell culture and in vivo, using electroporation of the chick embryo.

We present a protocol to explore the relative activation sequence of phonology and semantics in visual word recognition. The results show that consistent with interactive accounts, semantic and phonological representations may be processed interactively, and higher-level linguistic representations may affect early processing.
