Water Pressure Test

A water pressure test is an engineering method that evaluates the strength, leak tightness, and structural integrity of a pipe, tank, vessel, or plumbing system by applying controlled water pressure. The test fills the component with water, removes trapped air, and raises pressure to a specified level for a defined period while technicians monitor pressure loss, leakage, and visible deformation. Because water is far less compressible than gas, hydrostatic testing limits stored energy and provides a safer alternative to pneumatic testing in many situations. Engineers use the results for quality control, commissioning, maintenance, code compliance, and early detection of defects before equipment enters service.

Minimum Burning Pressures of Water-based Emulsion Explosives

2017

We present an apparatus based on hot-wire ignition in a pressurized enclosure and an associated methodology to measure the minimum pressure required to induce sustained combustion in water-based emulsion explosives. This method improves product characterization to allow one to use them more safely during pumping and mixing operations.

Synthesis and Microdiffraction at Extreme Pressures and Temperatures

The laser heated diamond anvil cell combined with synchrotron micro-diffraction techniques allows researchers to explore the nature and properties of new phases of matter at extreme pressure and temperature (PT) conditions. Heterogeneous samples can be characterized in situ under high pressure by 2D mapping and combined powder, single-crystal and multigrain diffraction approaches.

High-pressure Sapphire Cell for Phase Equilibria Measurements of CO2/Organic/Water Systems

2014

The high pressure sapphire cell apparatus is a unique tool to study, without sampling, phase behavior under a wide range of pressures. Using a cathetometer, very precise volume measurements can be recorded to measure liquid expansion and phase composition. Thus, this synthetic method enables the study of (1) phase equilibria of multi-component mixtures and (2) the partition behavior of catalyst or model compounds as a function of pressure.

Vapor Pressure

2020

When a liquid vaporizes in a closed container, gas molecules cannot escape. As these gas phase molecules move randomly about, they will occasionally collide with the surface of the condensed phase, and in some cases, these collisions will result in the molecules re-entering the condensed phase. The change from the gas phase to the liquid is called condensation. When the rate of condensation becomes equal to the rate of vaporization, neither the amount of the liquid nor the amount of the vapor...

Vapor Pressure Lowering

2020

The equilibrium vapor pressure of a liquid is the pressure exerted by its gaseous phase when vaporization and condensation are occurring at equal rates: Dissolving a nonvolatile substance in volatile liquid results in a lowering of the liquid’s vapor pressure. This phenomenon can be explained by considering the effect of added solute molecules on the liquid's vaporization and condensation processes. To vaporize, solvent molecules must be present at the surface of the solution. The presence of...
