Wire Size Comparison

Wire size comparison is the engineering practice of evaluating conductors by cross-sectional area, diameter, or gauge to select a wire that safely meets an electrical design’s requirements. Because conductor resistance depends on material, length, and cross-sectional area, larger conductors generally carry more current with less voltage drop and heat generation; insulation, installation conditions, and allowable temperature further affect ampacity. Comparing wire sizes helps engineers choose conductors for power distribution, control systems, electronics, and building wiring while balancing electrical performance, physical space, flexibility, and cost. Clear comparisons also support reliable designs and help prevent overheating, energy loss, and premature equipment failure.

2023

Source: Ricardo Mejia-Alvarez and Hussam Hikmat Jabbar, Department of Mechanical Engineering, Michigan State University, East Lansing, MI Hot-wire anemometers have a very short time-response, which makes them ideal to measure rapidly fluctuating phenomena such as turbulent flows. The purpose of this experiment is to demonstrate the use of hot-wire anemometry.

The Anchoring-and-Adjustment Heuristic

In order to make good decisions, we use our knowledge and our reasoning. Often, this knowledge and reasoning is sound and solid. However, sometimes, we are swayed by biases or by others manipulating a situation. For example, let’s say you and three friends wanted to rent a house and had a combined target budget of $1,600. The realtor shows you only very run-down houses for $1,600 and then shows you a very nice house for $2,000. Might you ask each person to pay more in rent to get the $2,000...

An automated myography method for force measurements in isolated mesenteric arteries is described. It employs a Mulvany-Halpern Auto Dual Wire Myograph 510A to determine responses to phenylephrine and extracellular calcium. The method allows consistent determination of isometric responses to agonists in small vessels of diameters of 60 - 300 μm, independently.

Adjusting a Traverse

In the site survey of a four-sided traverse, internal angles are essential to ensure geometric accuracy. The survey revealed that the sum of the measured internal angles was 359 degrees and 48 minutes, which is 12 minutes less than the expected 360 degrees. This discrepancy signals an error likely arising from measurement inaccuracies during the fieldwork. To rectify this error, the adjustment process involved distributing the 12-minute shortfall equally across the four internal angles. By...

In accounting, a business's economic activities are segmented into designated time intervals, typically monthly, quarterly, or annually, known as accounting periods. This segmentation facilitates consistent tracking, summarization, and reporting of financial data, enabling stakeholders to accurately evaluate a company's performance and financial position. Companies must incorporate adjusting entries at the close of each period to ensure that financial reports conform to the accrual basis of...
