Ilmenite Exsolution

Ilmenite exsolution is a mineral-forming process in which a solid solution separates into ilmenite-rich and iron-oxide-rich phases as temperature, composition, or oxygen conditions change. During cooling, reduced solubility drives atomic diffusion and produces fine lamellae or other intergrowths within the original crystal, linking mineral texture to thermal and redox history. In environmental and geoscience research, these textures help reconstruct the formation and alteration of igneous and metamorphic rocks, assess iron and titanium mineral behavior, and interpret magnetic and geochemical signals in sediments and weathered materials. Their stability also informs studies of mineral weathering and the long-term cycling of iron and titanium.
