Infrared Emitter Detector

An infrared emitter detector is a sensing system that pairs an infrared source with a detector to identify changes in radiation, enabling noncontact measurement of objects, surfaces, or conditions. The emitter sends infrared light, while a photodiode or similar detector measures radiation that is reflected, transmitted, or interrupted; signal strength changes with distance, position, surface properties, or intervening material. In environmental research, these systems support automated monitoring and control in instruments, field devices, and laboratory setups where visible-light sensing may be limited. Their rapid, low-contact operation helps improve measurement consistency and enables continuous data collection.

Source: Vy M. Dong and Zhiwei Chen, Department of Chemistry, University of California, Irvine, CA This experiment will demonstrate the use of infrared (IR) spectroscopy (also known as vibrational spectroscopy) to elucidate the identity of an unknown compound by identifying the functional group(s) present. IR spectra will be obtained on an IR spectrometer using the attenuated total reflection (ATR) sampling technique with a neat sample of the unknown.

We describe the generation of far-infrared radiation using an optically pumped molecular laser along with the measurement of their frequencies with heterodyne techniques. The experimental system and techniques are demonstrated using difluoromethane (CH2F2) as the laser medium whose results include three new laser emissions and eight measured laser frequencies.

Functional Near-Infrared Spectroscopy for Recording Brain Activity During Social Interactions

Source: Reindl, V., et al. Conducting Hyperscanning Experiments with Functional Near-Infrared Spectroscopy. J. Vis. Exp. (2019) This video demonstrates the use of functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) to measure brain activity during social interactions. Participants engage in a coordinated task that increases activity in the prefrontal cortex, a region critical for social behavior, while the system detects changes in light absorption due to blood oxygenation. By analyzing the synchrony...
