Irrigation Protocol

An irrigation protocol is a planned procedure for delivering water to soil or plants in a controlled, efficient, and repeatable manner. It specifies factors such as water volume, application timing, delivery method, and monitoring conditions, allowing irrigation to respond to soil moisture, plant requirements, weather, and site characteristics. In environmental research and management, protocols help evaluate water use, drainage, runoff, and plant or ecosystem responses under defined conditions. Standardized irrigation practices support conservation, reduce unnecessary water loss, improve experimental reproducibility, and inform sustainable approaches to agriculture, landscape management, restoration, and climate-resilient water planning.

Design Example: Design of an Irrigation Channel

2025

Trapezoidal channels are widely used in irrigation systems due to their cost-effectiveness and efficiency in conveying water. Trapezoidal channels feature a flat bottom and sloping sides, making them stable and easier to construct compared to other shapes. The bottom width and side slope ratio are determined based on the required flow capacity and site conditions. The side slope is kept gentle for unlined channels to prevent soil erosion.Hydraulic parameters in channel design include the flow...

A detailed method for extraction and assembly of intact soil core lysimeters and their use for study of leachate and associated loss of nutrients from surface applied poultry litter is demonstrated.

Wastewater Irrigation Impacts on Soil Hydraulic Conductivity: Coupled Field Sampling and Laboratory Determination of Saturated Hydraulic Conductivity

2018

Here we present a methodology which matches a soil sample size and a hydraulic conductivity measurement device to prevent the so-called wall flow along the inside of the soil container from being erroneously included in water flow measurements. Its use is demonstrated with samples collected from a wastewater irrigation site.

Neutrophils are among the first cells to arrive on the site of inflammatory immune response, and their functions and mechanisms have been studied extensively in vitro. We demonstrate a standard density gradient separation method to isolate human neutrophils from whole blood using commercially available separation media.
